Summer Undergraduate Research Program at Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Center for Biomedical Research

Special Academic Program

Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP)
ACBR is organizing Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP) of 14 weeks duration to impart practical training in various newly emerging research techniques in the multi-disciplinary areas of biotechnology. The purpose of organizing the courses is to reorient the existing manpower within a short period of time to meet the immediate requirement of expanding R&D activities in biotechnology within the country. The ACBR identifies areas for training as well as universities and other research institutions where high expertise and adequate infrastructure exist for organizing these courses. Mid-career scientists having permanent positions in the institutes are selected on sponsorship basis to ensure that necessary facilities are provided to them by their host institutions to work further in their area of training.
Summer Undergraduate Research program (SURP) is designed to enable college students with a strong interest in Biology/Chemistry to experience Laboratory Research from may to August every year. SURP trainees undergo a sound theoretical and quality analytical training in the various fields of bio-medical science. The trainees choose a specific area of research and training in consultation with faculty and postdoctoral fellows. Motivational training is also provided to enhance their level of achievements, quality orientation and productivity.
All SURP students also participate in weekly journal club organized and lead by graduate students and they finish the program by writing a project report and dissertation, that describe their work and research experience. The students (SURPs) are supposed to attend two to three lectures in the morning from 9.00 a.m. onwards and then join the labs for their project work everyday. Students are required to submit a detailed Research project report at the end of the program, followed by presentation of their work and viva voce examination. During the program, students are also taken to various Biotechnology Research Centres and Industries such as Regional Research Laboratory, Jammu, Indian Oil Co-operation, Research & Development Center, Indian Institute of Petroleum, Ranbaxy Research Laboratories and other Research Institutes. This is the first such course being started by Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Center for Biomedical Research at the University of Delhi.
Application for training under SURP should be sent to the Director, ACBR on plain paper so that it reaches on or before May 15th every year

The outstanding Students will be offered a Scholarship/Fellowship of Rs 2,500/- on completion of SURP.
Science Academy Summer Research Fellowship Programme for Students and Teachers
The three national Science Academies viz. the Indian National Science Academy New Delhi, Indian National Academy of Science, Allahabad and, The Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore, together offer two-month Summer Fellowships to enable students/teachers to work with Academy Fellows and reputed scientists every year. Applications are invited by the academies from interested students and teachers from all Universities and Colleges affiliated to UGC/AICTE/MCI/Accredited Institutions of State Universities for these Fellowships. Every year 5-6 selected candidates carry out their two months summer research project awarded by the academies at ACBR.
Training Program
Training Programme for college teachers under the CPDHE, self-initiated programmes for students and school teachers in modern areas of biology and chemistry are conducted periodically by the faculty of the Center with the support from different organizations.
